5 Eye Exercises to Improve Your Vision

Posted on February 19th, 2018

We all know how important exercise is to the overall health of our bodies. But did you know there are some basic exercises you can do to improve the overall health of your eyes? While these exercises won't cure you of any existing vision issues or diseases, studies have shown that these types of exercises may help strengthen your overall eye health.

Here are five quick and easy exercises you can do to help improve your overall vision and reduce minor vision-related issues such as eye fatigue and migraines.

1. Focus on Near and Far Objects

Focusing is a simple and effective way to strengthen your eye muscles. You can do this exercise almost anywhere and it only takes a few minutes.

  • Sit or stand in a comfortable position
  • Hold your thumb about 10 inches in front of you
  • Focus on your thumb for a few seconds
  • Now focus on another object 10 to 20 feet in front of you
  • Alternate between focusing on your thumb and the distant object for 2 to 3 minutes

2. Eye Zooming

This exercise is all about quickly adjusting the focus of your eyes in order to keep your vision sharp.

  • Sit in a comfortable position
  • Stretch out your arm in front of you and extend your thumb
  • Focus on your thumb for a few seconds
  • Now bring your thumb 3 inches from your face
  • Now rapidly extend the thumb away from your face
  • Alternate between bringing your thumb closer and farther away for 2 to 3 minutes

3. Eye Palming

This simple exercise offers your eyes a much-needed break and can help relieve tension accumulated in the ciliary muscle of the eye (which helps control how objects are viewed at various distances).

  • Close your eyes and lower your head
  • Very gently press three fingers from each hand against each eyelid
  • Hold for 3 to 5 seconds, then release
  • Repeat for 2 to 3 minutes

4. Rapid Blinking

It might sound (and look) a little ridiculous, but this exercise can be a great way to refresh your eyes, particularly during periods of eyestrain (such as working in front of a computer).

  • Blink as quickly as you can for 1 to 2 minutes
  • Now try NOT to blink for 30 seconds at a time for 2 minutes

5. Eye Area Massage

This simple exercise can help you relax your eye muscles, relieving stress and eyestrain.

  • Sit in a comfortable position and close your eyes
  • Very gently place your thumbs below your eyebrows and above the inside corner of your eyes
  • Place the other four fingers of each hand on your forehead
  • Gently press your thumb into the area below your eyebrow for 2 to 3 seconds
  • Now place your middle fingers on your cheekbones, directly below the centre of each eye. Massage the centre part of your cheek for 2 to 3 seconds.
  • Repeat as needed

All of these exercises can either be done separately or together, and can easily be incorporated into your daily routine. Again, while these exercises won't cure you of any existing eye conditions, they may help reduce eyestrain, eye fatigue, headaches, and other minor vision-related issues. Remember that the best way to avoid eye issues and maintain healthy eyes is by scheduling a complete eye exam with an optometrist.
